the scent you reach for without thinking

It started as a practical thing. Something to support sleep, something to quiet the static that lives behind my eyes by 9pm. The magnesium sat next to my water glass and after a few nights I stopped noticing I was taking it, which is probably the point.

The scraping tool was already warm before I reached for it. Hot compress, slow pressure, the kind of thing you do in low light when the evening has given you permission to stop. It's a ritual that asks nothing of you except to stay still for a minute.

That part is harder than it sounds.

Cold therapy after a long run sounds clinical until it isn't. The remote control sits on the nightstand and something about the hum of it, the way the cold wraps evenly around the joint, makes the whole thing feel less like recovery and more like care.

I kept coming back to it because I couldn't place what was different. Not soreness exactly. More like the feeling of having done something your body was asking for. The machine does the work and you just exist there, which is either nothing or everything depending on the week.
